In honor of the Citizen Science Program, today I’ll highlight some great digital image resources in the sciences:

Images from the History of Medicine (IHM): Provides access to nearly 70,000 images in the collections of the History of Medicine Division of the U.S National Library of Medicine.

Microbe Library:  Supported by the American Society for Microbiology, the Microbe Library provides peer-reviewed teaching resources for undergraduate microbiology education.  Collections include images, animations and video clips.

LIFE: Library of Images from the Environment: Includes images of plants, animals, fungi, microorganisms, habitats, wildlife management, environmental topics, and biological study/fieldwork. The LIFE image collection is maintained by the NBII (National Biological Information Infrastructure), a division of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Science & Society Picture Library:  Over 40,000 digital images from the collections of the Science Museum, the National Railway Museum and the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in London.  Categories include Medicine & Health, the Natural World, and Science & Technology.

Index of Medieval Medical images: Maintained by the History and Special Collections of the UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, IMMI describes and indexes the content of medieval manuscript with medical components presently held in North American collections.  The index can be searched by subject, image type, date or manuscript title.

ARTstor is another great resource for images of all types including scientific imagery.  You can browse the Classification for Science, Technology and Industry or search by keyword for specific plants and animals or specific diseases and medical conditions (the term ‘Plague’ returned 275 images!).  ARTstor is a subscription database available through the Library’s A-Z Databases page.

For more image databases in the sciences, search under the science tag on the Visual Resources Center Delicious site.
