The Graphics Atlas

Detail of a woodcut illustration from the Nuremberg Chronicle, 1493.

The Image Permanence Institute at the Rochester Institute of Technology has developed the Graphics Atlas, a new online resource that explores the history of printing technologies through text and images.  The Atlas presents a virtual study collection that showcases printing processes from the early woodcut to the modern digital print. Each process is illustrated by one or more images, which include magnified surface views for closer analysis.  A comparison tool allows you to view two images side by side in order to compare traits across processes.
